Collaborative Learning in a Virtual Classroom: Highlights of findings

Abstract
Software to support teaching and learning activities was added to a computer mediated communications system to create a “virtual classroom.” The goals included improving access to and effectiveness of college-level courses, particularly by facilitating collaborative learning. The process and outcomes were compared for sections of several courses taught in the traditional classroom, totally online, or in a mixed mode. On the average, the students reported that the virtual classroom provides a better learning experience.

Annotation
Using a pre and post course questionnaire major findings included convenience,
increased interest, involvement and motivation.
The qualitative outcomes of the study found that computer mediated courses woks better for well-motivated students.
