Abstract
This study sought to determine the impact that student behaviors and perceptions of online courses had upon student
learning, satisfaction, and grades by looking at several online courses at UW-Milwaukee and Milwaukee Area Technical
College. Using hierarchical regression and six measures of student preparedness and readiness, this study found that the
student’s perceptions of their engagement, social presence in the course, and feelings about their learning community within
an online course are important perceptions significantly predicting student outcomes. Three measures, (1) Engagement, (2) Social Presence, and (3) Learning Community were found to positively impact students learning, satisfaction, and final grade after controlling for known covariates influencing student outcomes.

Abstract

satisfaction, and grades by looking at several online courses at UW-Milwaukee and Milwaukee Area Technical College. Using
hierarchical regression and five measures of instructional characteristics, this study found that the design components of
an online course are important instructional characteristics significantly predicting student outcomes. Design and
Organization was found to positively impact students learning, satisfaction, and performance after controlling for known
covariates influencing student outcomes.
